How to Write a Best Man Speech
Chances are, if you've been chosen as a best man, you know the groom pretty well. And maybe by now you're aware that everyone is expecting you to give a best man speech - a toast - at the wedding reception. To help you prepare for the speech, here are just a few things you should remember.
*Prepare! Don't try to wing it. Even if you're the most quick-witted and glib person around (and maybe you are!), you can't rely on chance; anyone's mind could go completely blank when it's time to make a speech.
At least jot down a few points or key phrases if you don't want to write it out word-for-word ahead of time.
*Humor is good, but don't forget to be serious. Okay, that's an oxymoron, but it's important. Without a little humor, you risk boring the guests.
Even so, it's vital to remember that your best man speech should be a respectful tribute to the couple's new life together. You can be sure that the two of them take their marriage very seriously, and they want to know that you honor that. And remember, sarcasm may be an appreciated form of humor in the right situation, but a wedding is NEVER the right situation.
*Be brief. Please don't ramble on. Before the big day, practice giving your speech in front of another person. Watch them. If their eyes glaze over, you need to trim down your speech.
*Go easy on the anecdotes. Whatever you do, avoid telling stories about old wives and girlfriends, and avoid reminding all the guests about something particularly embarrassing. This won't endear you to your friend's new wife. And trust me, if his wife doesn't like you, you won't be seeing much of your buddy after the wedding.
*Share something you like - something appropriate! - about the bride. See the previous tip about endearing yourself to her.
*Last but not least, be sincere. You were chosen as best man for a reason. Remember that, and share your joy in your good friend's happiness, and your best man speech will be remembered with thanks.
