Treating Brontophobia With Hypnotism

by Alan Densky

Brontophobia is a common condition that millions people everywhere possess; the fear of thunder and lightning. For as long as this condition has existed, people have been seeking out ways to fight it. Today, there are numerous treatment options in use. To help overcome this phobia, experts call for specific hypnotherapy techniques that are proven to work in dissipating common fears.

Brontophobia sufferers possess an abnormal fear of thunder and lightning. Loud, startling thunder and cracks of lightning can set off nervousness and panic attacks in brontophobia sufferers. Other signs include a racing heart, perspiring, and an intense feeling of fear, which increases until a person becomes sick.

The fear of thunder and lightning starts early for lots of people, when as children, we cower under blankets during a big storm. The phobia can be especially difficult for young children. Many frightened children feel powerless during bad weather, and their mothers and fathers may also feel powerless to take away their anxieties.

Despite its common occurrence in children, brontophobia can be triggered at any time, frequently after someone has an unpleasant experience such as getting shocked, which reminds them of a flash of lightning. A traumatic experience such as surviving a hurricane may also cause a fear of thunder and lightning.

An individual may come to associate loud noises, the sensation of discomfort, or terror with rainy days, which may grow into a serious phobia. Brontophobia is so widespread that it's even observed in some animals; for example, many pet owners notice that their pet dogs seem scared during bad weather.

Phobia sufferers try to avoid seeing or hearing storms. People may suffer nervous breakdowns during natural disasters such as floods. This can threaten them if they are unable to function in a situation which calls for them to remain calm and act decisively.

Phobia sufferers often dread storm season, often struggling during times of the year when thunderstorms occur frequently. They might obsessively check weather forecasts and act extra cautious during bouts of bad weather. To others, these actions may seem obsessive and highly paranoid. People afflicted with the phobia may find this condition slowly taking control of their lives.

There are many options available for relieving brontophobia and other irrational fears. Popular ones include counseling, anti-anxiety medication, and hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapy tends to deliver safer, quicker results and it is non-invasive, having no harmful side effects. For these reasons and others, hypnotherapy has become a a popular therapy.

Hypnotherapy is excellent as a class of stress-relief therapy and has traditionally been used for its calming properties. By starting with stress-relief techniques, hypnotherapy helps tense, troubled individuals with phobias begin the process of overcoming their fears. When a person is feeling calm, it is easier for hypnotherapy techniques to direct the unconscious mind into a fear-free thought process.

Most phobias are linked to negative triggers, which become connected to fear deep within the unconscious mind. For brontophobia sufferers, the rumble of thunder, the flash of lightning, or even the sight of clouds often provokes alarm. Hypnosis and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) work at the unconscious level of the mind to dissociate fear from these triggers to provide powerful phobia relief. One of the most effective techniques is called the NLP Visual/Kinesthetic Disassociation.

Ericksonian hypnotherapy is a form of hypnotherapy that is frequently used to treat fears. Named for its creator, Dr. Milton Erickson, MD, this form of hypnosis uses indirect suggestions hidden in metaphors, stories, and conversation to eliminate a phobia. Indirect suggestions are more effective than traditional post-hypnotic direct suggestions because people tend to question, resist, and reject direct orders. Suggestions which indirectly communicate to the conscious mind are more able to empower people to vanquish their phobias.

NLP techniques and Ericksonian hypnotherapy have an additional advantage over other hypnotherapy programs because they are designed to treat any phobia. So a single program is usable for curing any phobia, or even several phobias if necessary. Plus, each program employs many different techniques to be effective for everybody.

For many people, hypnotherapy is an ideal choice of treatment, which offers rapid and permanent results. Hiding under the sheets and being frightened is not the way a phobia sufferer should live. With hypnotherapy and NLP techniques, virtually anyone can overcome this serious fear.
