Emetophobia and Hypnosis

by Alan Densky

Many people have emetophobia, but this condition is almost never discussed in the open. Simply put, this phobia is defined as a fear of vomit. Those with severe emetophobia are willing to go to any lengths necessary to avoid vomiting or seeing vomit. Even though people with emetophobia typically cope by avoiding the source of their fear, it can be completely eliminated using techniques like Ericksonian hypnotherapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming.

Emetophobia is a common phobia with significant consequences for its sufferers. Some people will not dine out or with guests out of fear of acquiring a foodborne illness. Expecting mothers with emetophobia are often terrified of having morning sickness. Emetophobia also makes it difficult for parents to tend to their newborns or tend to their small kids if they fall ill.

Emetophobia can seriously affect an individual's ability or willingness to travel. An individual might be scared of going to another country and catching an illness. Many people will avoid public settings and transportation because they are afraid of falling ill or even seeing someone else getting sick. The fear also interferes with one's ability to hold jobs in certain fields, such as nursing and hospital work.

The phobia is often caused by childhood incidents. Emetophobics may remember the feeling of being ill and wish to avoid it at all costs. They may also fear illness because they link it with a loss of physical control. This phobia affects people of all ages.

Emetophobia can grow into other anxiety disorders and phobias. Many people will develop agoraphobia, a fear of unknown places which can confine a person to their own home. People with emetophobia may also have a strong fear of hospitals or germs. What starts as emetophobia can rapidly escalate into many conditions stemming from the first fear.

Many people try to deal with their fear by avoiding it whenever possible, but emetophobia can be successfully cured with options ranging from counseling to medication. However, there are some unique challenges associated with curing emetophobia. After a long period of time, the phobia becomes associated with powerful negative imagery in the unconscious. The fear is so deeply rooted that it cannot be regulated by willpower or conscious effort alone. Sufferers may be willing to admit that their fear is irrational, but still feel helpless to treat their condition.

Hypnosis is a powerful tool for curing phobias because it can disconnect or dissociate a fear from negative images within the unconscious mind. It is an excellent type of safe, non-invasive therapy that provides a permanent phobia cure.

Hypnotherapy treatments often take the form of a program broken down into multiple, easy-to-use sessions. A well-designed program starts with relaxation therapy. This has a soothing effect and helps make the mind more open to hypnotherapy. When a person feels tranquil and tension-free, hypnotherapy guides the unconscious mind into a new, phobia-free thinking process.

Ericksonian hypnotherapy works well for indepedent thinkers, such as the many emetophobia sufferers who find it important to have control over their own health and fitness. It uses indirect suggestions integrate in stories, metaphors, and dialogues. It offers an alternative to conventional hypnosis techniques, which use direct post-hypnotic suggestions to treat single phobias. These conventional techniques may fail because people are likely to question and resist direct suggestions. With Ericksonian hypnotherapy, these problems can be circumvented.

Due to the fact that emetophobia is often accompanied by other disorders such as social phobia and agoraphobia, it is important for a good treatment program to address all of these issues. Ericksonian hypnotherapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) techniques work more effectively than conventional hypnosis programs because they are not phobia specific; they can be used to cure any phobia, or even more than one phobia. Moreover, the combined program will be effective for most users because it contains a range of techniques to work for any individual.

Phobia sufferers are usually pleasantly amazed at how easily they get results using hypnotherapy. It has allowed many people rapidly overcome their phobias and it is a popular type of phobia treatment. The techniques in Ericksonian hypnosis and NLP are productive treatments for many anxiety disorders and fears. The techniques hold the answer for helping many emetophobia sufferers defeat their fears and feel secure and in control.
